What the project is about:
This research delves into the intricate dynamics of seniors’ smartphone usage, meticulously examining its implications on their physical health and mental well-being. Furthermore, it aims to develop targeted interventions geared toward fostering active ageing and facilitating meaningful social interaction among seniors.
The overall objective of this research is to address the issue of data absenteeism in the context of seniors’ smartphone use in Singapore, by exploring the following interrelated research questions (RQs):
RQ1: How are seniors using smartphones (ie., social interaction, information seeking, entertainment)?
RQ2: What is the impact of seniors’ smartphone use on their physical health, mental well-being, and offline social interactions?
RQ3: How can we use the data from seniors’ smartphones to develop an intervention to promote active ageing and vibrant social interaction?
The research methodology entails a comprehensive approach involving the collection of data through specialized smartphone apps and wearable cameras. This data will be meticulously analysed to extract meaningful insights. Moreover, the research emphasizes the importance of engaging seniors in the co-creation of interventions, ensuring that solutions are both effective and aligned with their needs and preferences.

By shedding light on previously unexplored aspects of seniors’ smartphone usage, this research endeavours to bridge critical data gaps while simultaneously addressing the digital divide. Ultimately, the envisioned interventions have the potential to significantly enhance the well-being and quality of life for seniors, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
